Bugle 219               Harrogate Evening Chess League               May 20th 2008

At the end of April Otley went to the Union in Knaresborough, where they did their best to wreck the chances of the champions retaining the title. Otley won on the lower boards and were 2-0 up at half time. A brilliant fightback by the champions came with a thrilling victory on board 2 and an exciting time scramble on top board. The match ended in a 2-2 draw, which meant that the Archbishops had to win their last match 4-0 to retain the championship on goal difference!

Yesterday, in the final match of the season the Knights of the Square Table played the Archbishops. Maggy played the Torre attack on Bd 4 for the Archbishops; Jack won with 2 rooks on the 7th rank for the Knights; Steve won with a terrific mating attack that came out of the blue on Bd 2, and leading Knight Ernie drew with Mike on Bd 1, he had an extremely active bishop and gave up his queen for rook and bishop. Although they lost a very close match 2-1, the Knights saved themselves from the ignominy of winning the wooden spoon and stopped the Archbishops retaining the title.

These results mean that the Harrogate Renegades win the championship on goal difference (ie. Board points or game points). Congratulations to the new champions - Harrogate Renegades!
