Congratulations again to the captain of Otley, Stuart Johnson who has won 5 games out of 5 – a record that stretches back into the distant past of the League. As controller I cannot remember a 100% score – but will check and no doubt, readers will let me know!
The AGM of the League will be held on Thursday 17th of September at 8pm in the Empress on the Stray.

Bugle 228 Harrogate Evening Chess League March 20th 2009

Jim played a champion game to lead his side to a 3-1 victory over the Knights of the Square Table. After his opponent bottled up his own pieces in a corner on board 2 Jim successfully sacrificed a knight ending with a stonking win. Robyn Malcolm won on bd 4 and with draws on boards 1 and 3 the match was won for Jim's Team. In the other match draw specialists Archbishops drew 2-2 at Otley.

Bugle 227   Harrogate Evening Chess League   February 21st 2009

The champions returned to winning ways at Otley but were stymied by the Knights who came back to earn a draw thanks to a sterling performance by captain Pete Gregory. In Ilkley, the match against the Archbishops could have gone either way but ended in an unusual 2-2 draw where there were draws on all four boards.

Bugle 224   Harrogate Evening Chess League   October 28th 2008

There are two changes to Bugle 223 that have happened. They are both changes in venue viz Jim’s Team now meets at the Old Star Inn at Clifford and the Archbishops meet at the Empress on the Stray.
I also want to emphasize that everyone must pay their subs by October 31st (Rule 1).
The new venues were mixed blessings as they were both in use for the opening matches of the League programme. Jim’s Team hosted Coliseum who came away 3½-½ victors. On Board 3 Ross Malcolm saved them from a 4-0 whitewash. In the other match the Knights raced to a 2-0 lead before Maggy Rowley and Mike Stokes, captain of the Archbishops pegged them back to a 2-2 draw.

Bugle 222   Harrogate Evening Chess League   September 15th 2008

The AGM of the League started at 8pm last Thursday. Present were Andrew Zigmond, Mike Stokes, William Boothman and myself, Gordon Marks. Steven Huxley and Mrs Huxley also joined us.
The funds in the treasury stood at a healthy balance of £11-64. The rules were reviewed and were fine. A proposal to increase the entry fee from next year (2009-10) was agreed. This means the entry fee per team will be £10 and the prize money will rise to £25! Mike and Andrew raised a couple of points mentioned but this was dismissed as unnecessary waffle by the controller. The trophy and £10 prize money was awarded to Andrew Zigmond, captain of the HC Renegades, the champions this season.

Board prizes were awarded as follows:

Board 1 Simon Weinberger with 4/4

Board 2 Steve Revell 3½/4

Board 3 Richard Tate 5/6

Board 4 Andrew Zigmond 4½/6

So far two teams have paid their subscriptions (£4 per team – doubling to £8 after Oct 31st!). Teams are roughly the same as last year, so I’ll get out a fixture list as soon as possible.

There being no further business, the meeting closed at 41 minutes past 8.
