Gordon’s last action before heading to NZ was to put out a very strong Mile Post team for this match. They achieved their 1st point and it could have been 2 if Douglas had accepted the offer of a draw from Mick. However, he went in search of a slight end game advantage but Mick recovered and then Douglas blundered.

An impressive draw by Dave Glover against Mark Rogerson and then the win from Richard Tate gave victory to the Renegades.

Having drawn their previous two matches, Archbishops needed to win this if they were to challenge for the title. Mick did well to hold Ernie to a draw having been on the back foot for most of the game following an inaccurate move in the opening. Steve had a blistering attack which eventually overcame stubborn defence from Charlie. It looked as if Archbishops would easily obtain the minimum one point needed for victory but after Peter held Maggy to a draw, excellent play by Jack defeated Dave so the match was tied.

The 1st league table shows KOST way out in front. Their final match will be against Otley who have played one, won one. Because of byes in early rounds and that Jim’s Team dropped out, however, Otley are not behind schedule!!

Bugle 235 Harrogate Evening Chess League November 25th 2009

I (Mike Stokes) am Acting Controller and have been asked to clarify the rules regarding the recording of moves during the game. What will apply in this competition is that when a player reaches the last 5 minutes of the one hour time control and 24 moves have not been completed, it is not compulsory to write down the moves. When the flag falls, the score sheet must be written up, with that person’s clock still ticking, to ensure that the 24 moves have been made. When the clocks are then turned back by 30 minutes, as there is no longer a requirement for a minimum number of moves to be played, there is no longer a requirement to record them. Obviously it is recommended that moves are recorded, e.g. without this it would not be possible to prove a draw by repetition.

On to the action!

There were some amazing battles in the KOST v Mile Post match.

For KOST, Jack Duckworth forced Gordon Marks to give up his Queen for a Rook and Bishop but Gordon fought back to leave Jack needing perpetual check to save the draw.

Peter Gregory was a full Queen to the good and just a few moves away from check mating Malcolm McHugh when he ran out of time, losing the game.

Graham Wilson had a disastrous opening against Charlie Callis, losing a Rook and Bishop. He still managed some mating threats to keep in the game and recoup most of the material but Charlie just held out for the win.

In comparison, the top board game between Ernie Little and Douglas McKerracher was a cagey affair. Douglas was pushing hard for a way through Ernie’s defence but he eventually overstretched and Ernie took the match.

Ilkley took their top guns to The Empress for their encounter with Archbishops. It was honours even as all four hard fought games ended in a draw.

With their 2½ - 1½ defeat of HC Renegades, KOST have moved clear at the top of the table with three wins out of three.

I am not aware of Jim’s Team or Otley having played any matches yet so I would ask them to do so to avoid a fixture pile up.

Bugle 234 Harrogate Evening Chess League October 29th 2009

Coliseum have collapsed and their place in the League has been taken by the Milepost. I will run the team this year so continue to play fixtures replacing Coliseum’s matches with those of the Milepost.

The Milepost played their first match against the Renegades and although they lost 3-1, it was no disgrace, indeed it was a close game to begin with but the Renegades drew clear with two early goals. All in all it was a very pleasant evening.

The same week Ilkley played hosts to the Knights of the Square Table and raced into a 1-0 lead early on but the Knights held firm to take the points with a deserved 2-1 win.
